PhD. Candidate: Walugembe Francis

Name: Walugembe Francis Student ID:66390063- School of Public Health- Walailak University

Education background: Bachelor of Environmental Management from Makerere University

Kampala Uganda, Postgraduate diploma in higher education Kampala International University

2017 and MSc Public Health Research by Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and

Technology/Ifakara Health Institute-2020

Prior to joining MScPHR I worked with Compassion International Uganda as a Project Officer in

charge of health and correspondence at Nyakayojo Child Development Centre Mbarara Uganda

at the same time I also coordinated the Young Empowered And Healthy (YEAH) program under

Uganda AIDS Commission as Young Advisory Group representative for western region. I later

worked as Project Director at Nakawa Students Centre in Kampala implementing a program

supporting vulnerable and disadvantaged youth to further their education and general welfare and

health of their families.

I joined Kampala International University as a Quality Assurance Officer in 2015 in charge of

the School of Health Sciences till I enrolled for MScPHR in January, 2018.

I was engaged with Indian Medical Research Council/ Scientific Technical Research

Commission- African Union (IMRC/AU-STRC) as an IMRC/AU-STRC Fellow. I was also

trained by Mwanza Interventional Training Unit (MITU-NIMRI) in research methods for health

programs at Mwanza. I also pursued masters in Marine Plastic Abatement at Asian Institute of Technology Pathumthani Thailand. I have two publications in peer reviewed journals.

My interests lie in multidisciplinary research on health system enhancement and implementation,

effects of environmental change on vector borne diseases and outbreak investigations. Disease

epidemiology and socio-cultural norms and attitudes often make surveillance and control

difficult. Climate change and population growth are changing the existing environment at an

alarming rate resulting in deforestation, landslides and floods hence increasing infectious disease

outbreaks. I am particularly interested in health threats from land use changes in East Africa,

where climate change has different effects. Infectious diseases such as cholera, dengue, ebola, malaria are for example endemic and their persistence is associated with environmental and climatic conditions.

I am also interested in vector borne disease and the changes in mosquito ecology due to

environmental change which poses new and increasing problems to human health. Iam looking

forward to using the acquired knowledge and research skills to promote and actively participate

in health research to find remedies to the existing public health challenges through scientific

research at Walailak  University School of Public Health.
